NYC Marathon: 7-Mile Piss Break

Shortly after the 7-mile mark in the ING New York City Marathon, runners passing through Park Slope, Brooklyn on 4th Ave. are treated to a Poland Spring sponsored water station. Fortunately for the runners, now tanked up on H2O, a vacant lot perfect for a quick piss is just one block away. This impromptu public urinal served many runners well today.

I like "Toby", whose purple polka-dotted shirt announces, "I am helping make dreams come true ... by pissing on your house!" And how about the folks who are sponsored by Xerox? Their excuse is that they were just copying what everyone else was doing.
Incidentally, I got into a mild argument with another spectator who scoffed my photographing this spectacle. He said it was disrespectful of me to take photos of their private moment. I asked if it was any more disrespectful than pissing on the side of someone's house. And what makes this such a private moment? Pissing ain't no sacred ritual that shouldn't be filmed, like euthanasia or bum fighting. He argued that these people need to pee, but I don't need to take photos. I dropped the America Bomb and expressed elation for living in a country where we are free to take photos of whatever the hell we want. If we stop these guys from peeing, and I don't take the pictures, then the terrorists will have won.

I wished the fellow well and continued to preserve the moment.

UPDATE: I was interviewed by NY Daily News about this post.

Having run the Marine Corps Marathon, I think it is important to point out several things here.
1) people peeing in public is just gross
2) it's mostly men. i saw hundreds of guys on the side of the road and very few women. they were the ones in line at the porta pottys
3) porta pottys are not really that available, and often have long lines and are not there when a runner may need them.
4) many of these runners are overly hydrated in an attempt to stave off their inevitable dehydration
5) your kidneys shut down during running which explains why a few miles into the race many people are no longer relieving themselves due to other bodily demands that are clearly more stressful

Draining the lizard in public is a New York tradition. Period. I myself have whizzed on the sidewalk, into hedges, against the wall of numerous public schools, down sewer grates, against handball walls, out a hotel window onto an awning, at somebody's leg (when I get pissed off, I get pissed off), between two urinals, and of course, like any wild bear, in the woods. In fact, I'm hoping to make a really bad enemy so I can piss on his mother's grave.

And so you took pictures. Dog bites man, all the way.

If people care so much about this alley why does it have so much trash in it? Whats the big deal really...its not like you can see weiner, they are all courteously angled to the wall. Cut them some slack they are trying to run a marathon for piss sake.

What's the big deal about the runners in the New York Marathon pissing in that alley? I'm sure that a lot worse happens to the buildings along the route of the St. Patrick's Day or the Caribbean Day Parade!

I myself have pissed in many alleys when the need arose!

When ya gotta go, ya gotta go... It's a MAN thing!!!

Where are the photos of their faces as they exit the alley? I'd like to see those posted.

I just snapped the photos because I found it amusing, a real human moment.

I would never post any face shots, I'm sure that would piss off the runners.

Actually, the terrorists have won. I used to take photos of airplanes at airports until 9-11 and never had problems. It is a hobby for us called "Plane Spotting".After 9-11, We were told to leave after officers took my name and other information. I was even chased away when the last Concorde arrived so the terrorists have won. Now, you can no longer enter airline terminals even to eat at McDonalds without having a boarding pass. What about having bags checked at train stations even if you're not suspicious?

What does the last post above taking photographs of planes at the airport have to do with runners pissing in some alley?

There is a big difference between taking a picture of a plane and taking one of a guy draining his lizard!

By the way, how would you like it if I took a picture of you pissing, or better yet, taking a dump?

If I had the moxie to piss in public with tons of people around (which I've done in the past), I'd smile for the camera.

I might also aim for you.

I don't think people should make a habit of it but if nature calls then it's ok to go to the bathroom, IT's a natural thing. People let dogs piss everyere and we are higher on the food chain so we should be allowed an occassional emergecy wiz.

I think that the pictures are awesome. Besides, I usually run faster if I have to pee.

Haven't you guys ever seen the photo of the HUGE open-air outdoor urinal trough which is installed every year at the Marathon starting point?

http://www.urinal.net/ny_marathon/

Guys piss openly...side by side...and in full public view. Guys will be guys...just because they're built for it!

I don't see much difference between what they all do together at the trough, and what these guys are doing together in the alley. Also check out the groups:

Makes sense to me...and it's fun!
